"An Angel at Brother Dan's Pantry"
Petoskey 11/10/09
She sat on a bench
In front of the kitchen
Watching
Legs brought up under her chin
Arms wrapped tight around just under the knees
Straight shinny hair with bangs just above her eyes
Bottom lip pushed up under her top lip
Eyes so sad
She sat on the bench
Watching
Moms with the volunteers
First the bread
Next the cans
Finally the frozen meat
A meal in the making
Quiet desperation on mom's face
She sat on the bench
Her right cheek now resting on her knee
She looks down the hall
Watching
Life wasn't like this
What happened
She doesn't know anyone
She looks cold
She won't look up at you
Then you catch her big soft eyes
A smile cracks
Burrows the face between those knees
She sits on a bench
Head back up
Coast is clear
Watching
We go about our business at Brother Dan's
For those of us giving back
There's proof of need
For those of us just being
She represents us all
Least we not forget...
She sits on a bench
Watching....
